IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Kylo Ren
Canon: Star Wars
Canon Point: Between episodes VIII and IX
Background: in summary | wikipedia

Suitability:

Kylo is a highly active and reactive character, which allows for plenty of active engagement with gamewide metaplot as well as involvement in and generation of smaller scale player-led plots. Despite initial annoyance at having been summoned, Kylo will be siding with Team Magic and throwing himself with vaguely menacing enthusiasm into whichever tasks appear to further the goal of harnessing the power of that very tasty-looking Singularity.

Broadly, Kylo gravitates towards plot hooks that:

Pique his curiosity.
Kylo just wants to know about things, particularly rare and secret things. He wants to apply himself to the challenge of unravelling mysteries, often just for the thrill of possessing the knowledge itself.
Make use of his skills.
Kylo likes doing what he’s good at, and will rarely pass up an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities. While he’d never consciously admit it, he very much wants to be useful, recognised and admired. If Thorne has a task for him, particularly if it’s a task he feels only he could accomplish, Kylo’s extremely likely to take it on. He’d be particularly interested in teaching, training and mentoring as well as using his abilities offensively against Thorne’s enemies.
Gain him power and resources.
Kylo’s always looking for ways to become stronger, increase his power and broaden his range of skills. In this setting where he is not the central antagonist nor anywhere near the most powerful being around, he’ll be interested in seeking and strengthening allies as well as testing and challenging himself.

Powers:
Kylo is sensitive to the Force, a name given to an underlying energy field that is generated by and connected to all living beings, binding together everything that exists. Through his awareness of his existence as a part of this Force, Kylo is able to manipulate reality by extending and imposing his will onto it. In Abraxas, I imagine the underlying magical energy of the world could serve a similar role, though it’d be really neat to play with any differences in the way the setting’s magic works!

The Force has been used in so many (and often contradictory) ways even within Kylo’s portion of the Star Wars canon that it’s difficult to give a complete list of everything it could potentially be used to do. That said, while the Force itself is essentially limitless, Kylo’s ability to use it varies dramatically depending on his situation. Actively using the Force requires focused, concentrated effort and a clear vision of what he wants to accomplish.

Force Sensitivity:
Kylo can sense movements in the Force. On a grand scale, this can allow him to perceive elements of important events without being present to witness them. On a much more immediate level, he is able to react to things that have yet to happen, giving the appearance of impossibly fast bullet-time reflexes. He is also capable (with ooc permission!) of sensing particularly strong emotions or catching glimpses of thoughts and intentions, particularly if they’re focused in his direction.
Meditating may, but usually doesn’t, grant Kylo a Force vision. These are most commonly ominous, unsettling and largely useless prophetic insights that make no sense until after the event.
Telepathy:
In addition to his more passive senses, Kylo possesses the ability to force himself into the minds of others. He is able to use this power to pass messages, implant suggestions or render someone unconscious as well as to actively retrieve thoughts, feelings, secrets and memories.
Telekinesis:
Kylo can use the Force to exert control over the physical world. He’s shown to be capable of using this ability on inanimate objects as well as packets of energy, restraining a laser bolt in mid-air with relative ease. While he’s also capable of mind-control, Kylo generally prefers to physically freeze sentient beings in place, drag them towards himself or throw them away. Further examples of this ability would include choking someone by telekinetically applying pressure to their throat.
Strength and endurance:
Using his connection to the Force, Kylo can perform feats of strength and stamina beyond the natural limits of his body. He is able to continue fighting even when severely injured, drawing further strength from the pain of his injuries.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Born into a family of legendary heroes who brought down a repressive galactic Empire and established a new Republic, there was an enormous weight of expectation placed on Han and Leia’s Force-sensitive son. Named after the legendary Jedi Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi and carrying in his blood the power and potential of the Skywalker line, it seemed only natural that he too would grow to be a champion of the Light. Secretly, however, his mother feared the dark potential she had felt stirring within him since before he was even born: as a Skywalker, Ben was also tied to the fallen Jedi who became the dark lord Darth Vader. This fear, as well as his parents’ inability to balance their galactic responsibilities with the needs of their child, left Ben vulnerable to dark influences.

At the age of ten, Ben was sent away to train as a Jedi with his uncle Luke, who essentially raised him from that point onwards while attempting to establish a new Jedi Order. Ben was his star pupil, demonstrating great power and aptitude as he threw his efforts into claiming his birthright, but increasingly worrying volatility, anger and resentment as he grew older. Eventually, Luke resolved to confront him, though he chose to do this by waiting until Ben was sleeping and using the Force to look into his mind. What he saw horrified him. Acting on the instinct of the moment and believing it to be the only way to prevent the dark future he had foreseen, Luke drew his weapon to kill Ben— but in the moment of hesitation, Ben woke up.

At that moment, Ben's entire worldview collapsed. Luke wasn't just an uncle he had trusted or the teacher he had tried so hard to please. Luke Skywalker was the arbiter of a moral standard he had been judged against and found wanting. This master of the new Jedi Order who had once seen goodness hidden in the heart of the most hated monster in the galaxy had looked into Ben's very soul and seen nothing that justified allowing him to live.

Betrayed, furious and terrified, he fought his way out and fled, leaving his former mentor for dead and the training temple ablaze.

With his once certain future as a Jedi in ruins, Ben turned to the familiar comfort of the voices in his head for answers— accepting the future Supreme Leader Snoke as his new teacher, Kylo as his new name, and affiliation with the dark Knights of Ren as his new path forward to fulfil his destiny.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

While Kylo would say he rejects the teachings of the Jedi and goes to great murderous lengths to try and prove he’s no longer bound by his parents’ expectations for him, he’s never fully successful in his attempts to rid himself of his childhood sense of morality or silence the parts of his nature that long to be protective and nurturing.

Ren, the second part of his chosen name, refers to the Ren, which the previous master of the Knights thereof explained as a philosophy of embracing the freedom of unfiltered, unapologetic and unaligned destruction. This is the code Kylo attempts to amalgamate into his own rather fatalistic understanding of the Will of the Force: he is willing to engage in extreme violence and brutality, but often only as far as he can justify it in service of his personal goals. Most Force-users who draw on the Dark Side of the Force appear to draw great satisfaction and pleasure from inflicting pain on others for no other reason at all; beyond a temporary release of frustration, Kylo does not. Still, regardless of his persisting discomfort, Kylo is unrepentant. He's a monster because that's what he is, and his actions are almost always yet more of his ongoing, escalating attempt to declare himself wholly dedicated to his chosen path.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Kylo admires confidence, persistence, self-determination and personal integrity. He’d rather choose the difficult road than the dishonest one, and has a great deal of respect for people who choose to confront and embrace painful truths.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Kylo is deeply dissatisfied with the unresolved conflict between what he feels he is and what he feels he should be. He views his inability to eradicate either side of his fractured nature as an intolerable, shameful weakness.

What is their sign, and why?
While Kylo could fit under a number of signs I’ve given him the Tower because it describes the aspects of his character I find most fun to play in a collaborative environment, especially in a setting with plenty of room for conflict between competing belief systems. While Kylo frequently engages in destructive behaviour, his underlying intention is to tear down the old to make way for something he personally believes will be better. He’s a reformer at heart, not only unwilling to tolerate broken systems but ready and willing to do something about it, regardless of how unpopular it makes him.
